{개요 / introduction}
Floet(flow+poet)은 ‘exquisite corpse’방식을 이용하여, 임의의 사용자들이 협업으로 하나의 시(詩)를 완성하는 어플리케이션이다. 사용자는 1회 1행의 시구(詩句)를 시스템에 업로드 할 수 있는데, 이전의 사용자가 등록해 놓은 한줄의 시구 만을 읽고 그에 대한 답글 형식으로 새로운 행을 추가하는 방식이다. 여러 사람들에 의해 완성 되어져 가는 (도형으로 시작화된)시들은 한달동안 화면위를 흐르다가 사라지는데, 이 시(詩) 들은 웹사이트에 저장되어 후에 날짜별로 열람할수 있다. 어플리케이션의 시각적 요소와 작동방식은 물결의 형태, 유동성, 방향성등에 착안하여 디자인되었다. 특정지역의 물이 흐르는 곳(Canal area, Providence, RI)에서만 접속을 가능하게 하여 사용자가 어플리케이션 사용시 그 주변환경에서 영감을 얻게 한다.
정보통신기구의 발달과 이용으로 선별적/피상적이 되어버린 현대사회인들 간의 의사소통 과정에, 즉흥적이고 예상치 못한 환경/대상과 접촉할 기회를 제공함으로써 특정지역사회에 대한 구성원들의 관심을 높이고, 그로 인해 구성원간 새로운 형태의 소통를 가능케 하는데 목적을 둔다.
Water flows to everywhere and meets everything. This meeting is spontaneous and unexpected: water does not choose or reject anything it comes in contact with. Water has no starting point, no ending point, and there is no boundary of how much it can exist as. People share these characteristics when brought into a relationship with water in public spaces. In the past, people gathered around water to serve their needs, as well as it served as a vehicle for trade and travel. In that environment water created possibilities for spontaneous connection, bringing new relationships to people. Today devices like the cell phone, e-mail and online messaging system have made communication more accessible for people. However, these new methods have changed our interrelationships to become more selective, more narrow. People only contact who they already know and limit their chances to contact people in their community at random.
Floet is an iphone application that allows you to create poetry with other people as a collaboration. It is something like an ‘exquisite corpse’ where one person will type in a poem and pass it on and another person will add on to it as a response and pass it on again. The rule of it is that the person adding can only see the line that came right before to add more spontaneity. The user can start or add a line and also view what the other users have created.

A line of poetry is indicated in the program as a one-fourth of a circle pattern (we will call this one unit). The unit has seven different colors and each indicates the different days of the week.

Units are attached to each other randomly (let’s call this group), turning right and left and creates various interesting patterns. The units change the direction of attachment (whether left of right) every time a user logs in. The maximum numbers of units in a group are limited up to 30 units and will be erased one by one from the oldest ones as the number exceeds.

사용자는 자신의 시구(詩句)를 첫 행으로 하여 새로운 시(詩)를 시작할 수 있는데, 이후에 임의의 다른 사용자들은 이를 읽고, 그에 덧붙이는 새로운 행을 추가할 수 있다. / The user can start a line of a poem so that who logs in afterwards, can read it to add their own line of poem as a response.

{function 2.} 기존 시(詩)에 추가하기 / add a line
사용자는 다른 사용자들에 의해 완성중인 시(詩)에 새로운 행을 추가할 수 있다. 해당 시(詩)에 바로 이전 사용자가 추가한 1행 만을 읽고 그것에 이어 쓸 수 있으며, 자신의 시구(詩句)를 등록한 후에야 전체시(詩)를 읽을수 있다. / The user can also “add a line” to the previous lines that were created. But the rule is that the user can only see the last line of the poem. It is to create the poem with more spontaneity.

다른 사용자들이 완성중인 시를 감상할수 있지만, 전체를 읽어 본 상태에서는 해당시(詩)에 새로운 행을 추가할수 없다. (이 어플리케이션은 예상치 못한 상황/대상과의 접촉으로 인한 새로운 경험을 임의의 사용자들에게 제공하고, 그 결과를 공유/감상하는 데에 목적을 둔다.) / There is also the option of viewing poems that other people have created. The user cannot add their line when they are on this page after they read the whole poem. We want to restrict the user to just see the line created right before them when they add their line, so it can be more spontaneous.

전체 시(詩)를 읽어 본 상태에서는 해당 시(詩)에 새로운 행을 더하거나 자신이 이전에 등록한 시구(詩句)를 수정할 수 없다. 빨간색 버튼을 누르면 메인화면으로 돌아가게 된다.
You can view the entire poem in which a line that you wrote is a part of it. This is the same screen you see when you touched any floating group on the main screen, to view its containing poem. When you touch the red button, you can go back to the main screen.

Floet is designed to return people to a more spontaneous interaction within the community. floet is a system based on the principle of water as a social magnet for community interaction. It will stimulate people to want to know more about each other’s interests and thus create a new conversation on a communal scale. The targeted users are people who visit the application working areas, including community members and visitors. The application area is along the Providence riverside paths.
